How Much Sleep Does Your Child REALLY Need?

Guest Post

Nicole Yontz is a stay at home mom in Arizona and a personal blogger at TheBetterHalfBlogs.com.

toddler-sleep

As the mother of a three year old, I spend my days worrying about pretty much anything under the sun. From picking up bad habits at school to eating dirt, I worry about it all. But one thing I don’t worry about is her sleep. See, she comes from a long line of sleepers. I myself would rather get a gift card for a nap than a massage. And as a child, when the rest of the family was waking I was quietly sneaking into my parents bed where my dad was snoring away knowing nobody was going to bother him (therefore me as well).

I am proud to admit that from the get-go she was a great sleeper. In fact, I had problems keeping her awake in order to feed her since she slept though the night a full 8 hours by nine weeks old. (Feel free to send your hate mail this way.) However, I know not all children are blessed in this area and, rest assured, I am fully aware that our next child will be a night owl with severe separation anxiety because that’s just how mom karma works.

So how much sleep does your toddler really need? The answer to this is between 10-14 hours over a 24-hour period, depending on your child. But if your child is having trouble in this area, there are things you can do to help your child get a better, more restful, night sleep. We as parents, often make the mistake of keeping our kids up thinking they will be more tired, therefore sleep better. But this couldn’t be further from the truth. It actually makes kids over tired, which makes it hard for them to sleep.

Here are some tips and for more ideas, check out WhatToExpect.com for more sleep training strategies.

First, in helping your child sleep better create a good sleep schedule that works realistically for your family. We all know things happen and life is not always predictable but having a set bed and nap time for your child will make the transition much smoother as your child will know, and expect, what is coming. Keep in mind when setting your nap time that the closer it is to bed time, the harder your child will have getting to sleep.

Next, develop your own bedtime routine. From bath time to bedtime stories, your bedtime routine can consist of whatever you want as long as it ends with your little one tucked snuggly in bed. In our house, we have bath time followed by 30 minutes of quiet TV time, then a book or two, prayers and finally me snuggling her in with her “woobie.” It happens the same way every night so there are no surprises and no fights.

Lastly, stay away from the long goodbye. We all know this one, it starts with a kiss and a hug, then one more kiss, one more hug, a glass of water, a trip to the bathroom, searching the house for a particular toy and the next thing you know you’re been trying to tuck your little one in for an hour. Don’t do this! Set limits on what you will allow. If your little one uses the same excuses to keep you close, head them off at the pass. For example, when you’re changing him into his PJs, have him potty and take a drink then. On the way to the bedroom, grab all stuffed animals he would need on the way, saying goodnight to the rest.

Sweet dreams!

Homemade Pizza With Pillsbury Artisan Pizza Crust {Review & Giveaway}

Homemade Pizza with Artisans Pizza Crust

~*~ Disclosure: The prize pack, information, and giveaway have been provided by General Mills and Pillsbury through MyBlogSpark. ~*~

If there’s one meal in my home that’s sure to bring the whole family to the dinner table, it’s pizza!  My son and husband prefer cheese pizza, while I love to mound on the pepperoni, heartburn and all.

When I was given the chance to review the new Pillsbury Artisan Pizza Crust with Whole Grain, I jumped at the chance to make some homemade pizza for my family. I’m constantly trying to get them to eat healthier things and what better way to convince them to eat better than to replace unhealthy foods with healthy ones?  The best place to start is with the foods and snacks eaten most often.

Here is a simple and quick recipe for homemade pizza.  I even took the chance to make some home-made pizza sauce because it’s SO much healthier than pre-made sauce you buy in stores that’s packed full of preservatives and high fructose corn syrup!

MyBlogSparkArtisanPizzaPost

Here’s what you need:

  • 1 can organic tomatoes {I used stewed with Italian seasonings for more flavor}
  • 1 Pillsbury Artisan Pizza Crust with Whole Grain
  • 1 cup mozzarella cheese, shredded {you can use extra if you want it super-cheesy}
  • pepperoni, optional

To Make Pizza Sauce

Pour the can of tomatoes into a blender and blend until smooth.  Pour the puree into a small sauce pan and heat over medium-high heat, stirring constantly, until reduced to desired consistancy {5-10 minutes}.  Remove from heat, let cool, and VOILA!  Makes enough sauce for one pizza.

To Make Your Pizza

  1. Roll out Pillsbury Artisan Pizza Crust with Whole Grain on a pizza pan {a cookie sheet will work, also} and pre-bake per manufacturer’s suggestion.
  2. Spread pizza sauce evenly on pre-baked pizza crust.  Sprinkle cheese and desired toppings on top of pizza sauce.
  3. Bake until cheese is melted {it only takes a few minutes}.
  4. Slice and enjoy!

Want to make this recipe yourself?  Then make sure you print this Coupon for $1.50 off one package of Pillsbury Artisan Pizza Crust before heading to the store to get your ingredients!

Sooth Your Child’s Aches & Pains with Thermal-Aid

thermal-aid picture

~*~ Disclosure: I received a complimentary sample to facilitate my review.  This in no way influenced my review & all opinions are 100% my own. ~*~

Sometimes, my son really can be his own worst enemy.  It seems like every day he’s developing new bumps, bruises, and scrapes. I’m constantly reminding him not to run on asphalt and cement because the fall hurts a lot worse than when he’s in the grass!  I’m pretty sure he gets his 2 left feet from his father ;)

Recently, I was sent Thermal-Aid Zoo Monkey for Little Man.  He wasted no time laying it gently in the freezer to stay cold.  Within a few hours of putting the Thermal-Aid Zoo Monkey in the freezer, Little Man found a use for it after bonking his head on a wood beam while working with Daddy. I was glad to see that his cries of pain quickly turned to giggles when I suggested he put the cold application on his forehead.

On top of being a cooling application for your little one’s bumps and bruises, Thermal-Aid 100% Natural Heating and Cooling Plush Animals can be heated in the microwave to provide and warm compress for your child.  Little Man wasn’t feeling good a few nights ago, so I warmed our monkey up and he quickly fell asleep snuggled up to the cuddly creature.

One of my favorite features about the Thermal-Aid 100% Natural Heating and Cooling Plush Animals is that they’re washable!  You can quickly and easily wash off any dirt, grime, or sweat that may get on your little buddy, restoring him/her back to its original condition.   Since Little Man is usually getting dirty when he gets hurt, it’s nice to know that I can quickly hand him the Thermal-Aid monkey and not have to worry that whatever he was playing in will get permanently stained onto the compress.

The Thermal-Aid 100% Natural Heating and Cooling Plush can be found in a variety of stores and online for only $14.95!  This is an amazing price for a product that can be used over and over for years to come.

The following plush animals are available:

  • Happy Hippo
  • Baxter Bunny
  • Jo Jo Monkey
  • Tiny Elephant
  • Ollie Koala
  • Buckley Bear
  • Bella Bear

If you’ve got an accident-prone child like me, you’ll LOVE these Thermal-Aid 100% Natural Heating and Cooling Plush Animals!  My son has used it so many times since we received it and I’m so thankful to have it sitting in our freezer, ready to use when we need it. Order yours now to receive a second Thermal-Aid plush for FREE {just pay separate P&H}.

Crock Pot French Toast

Crock Pot French Toast

When I first found out that I could cook french toast over night in t he crock pot, I was a little skeptical.  It was like nothing I’d ever heard of before and the idea was pretty odd.

I’m happy to report that the crock pot french toast came out GREAT and I can’t wait to make it again!

Here’s what you need:

  • 1/2 loaf french bread or 6-8 slices sandwich bread {feel free to mix it up with the flavors… cinnamon raisin bread would be DELICIOUS}
  • 4 large eggs {or 6 medium}
  • dash of milk
  • 1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon

Step 1:  If using french bread or a similar type of loaf, cut your bread into thick slices. You can use thin, too, but they won’t be so big and fluffy after the 8-hour cooking time.  If your bread is already cut up, go ahead and skip this step ;)

Step 2:  Combine the eggs, milk, vanilla extract, and cinnamon. Note that I use a LOT of vanilla and cinnamon. You could probably cut those ingredients in half and still have great french toast, I just wanted a stronger, more intense flavor.

Step 3:  Dip each slice of bread into the egg mixture making sure to fully coat each side.  Layer the dipped bread into your crock pot.  I chose to tier mine to reduce the pieces sticking together so bad.  Pour the remaining egg mixture over the bread.

Step 4:  Set your crock pot to the lowest setting {FYI: “Warm” is not a heat setting} and let cook for 7-8 hours.
