Starting Fall Off Nutritiously With Mi-Del Cookies {GIVEAWAY}

One thing I pride myself on is the fact that my Little Man eats extremely healthy food. He’s always loved fruits and vegetables, and while he doesn’t request it, Little Man will gladly drink water over juice any day. Like his Momma, though, my son has a very BIG sweet tooth. He actually doesn’t even care if it’s chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, or graham cracker – he loves almost all sweets and I’m yet to see him admit that he’s done eating them and doesn’t want any more. In an effort to make us both happy, I decided to grab a bag of Mi-Del’s Ginger Snaps.

Mi-Del cookies are all-natural/organic, and some are Gluten Free! They’re a treat you can feel good about giving your kid, and something they’ll love to eat! These delicious little cookies are filled with flavor and are made with all-natural ingredients.

While I enjoyed my cookies straight from the bag, Mi-Del Ginger Snap cookies can be transformed into a delicious looking pumpkin pie! Crush up some ginger snaps, combine with some melted butter, and you’ve got a simple, home-made pie crust! How awesome is that? Having the burst of ginger in your pie crust is sure to add a flare to your holiday desert that can’t be matched.

Now for the best part! Mi-Del has graciously offered THREE of my readers a bag/box of Mi-Del cookies for themselves! All you have to do to enter to be one of three lucky three is fill out the Rafflecopter giveaway entry form below:

Where to Put in a Change of Address

Our move from Virginia was such a quick one, that I didn’t remember to forward our mail until the day we climbed in the truck and drove out of the driveway! For businesses or personal, Updater.com can handle all of your mail change needs. On top of quickly and securely transferring your mail to your new address, Updater.com also has an Address Privacy service. For only $14.99, you can get 3 YEARS of:

Building a Site with an Online Website Builder

The first web site I ever built was for my parents’ company. It was plain and boring, but I built it by myself and was very proud of it.  When I undertook designing my blog, I found out that building a functioning site would require a lot more than what I put into the site I designed for my parents. I spent countless hours searching the web and picking the minds of fellow bloggers until I found an online website builder.

One of my favorite things about using an online website builder is how easy it is to create a professional looking website! You simple enter in your information, select the colors and layout you like, and the program does all the work for you! You don’t have to know any HTML or CSS coding for your information to be neatly displayed on any screen with ease.

You can also easily edit and add information with ease. You don’t have to start over or learn anything special in order to add quality content to your web site, or just change your mind as to how you want it laid out. Trust me, I’ve changed my mind about my site a million times and am glad that I have so many options. Even those who are technologically savvy find easy in using an online website builder. They’re inexpensive and save you so much time and headache!

Saving Money With a Spot Cooler

One of the hardest things for me to adjust to when I move to the desert was the HEAT! Yeah, it was great not having the humidity of Virginia anymore, but I was definitely not prepared for 120-degree weather during the late summer months! Since the house we moved into only has a swamp cooler, not being able to crank the air conditioning was a big adjustment, as well. I grew up in a family that owned a heating and air conditioning company – I really took that cool air for granted!

After last summer’s scorcher, my husband and I began looking into a spot cooler. These are excellent for when you only want to add air conditioning to one room – like for an office or studio home. You can also buy one that cools multiple rooms, saving you on the expensive costs of installing central air conditioning. Companies like Suiden even sell smaller ones that are great for just a small cubical in a much larger room!

Another appealing thing about a spot cooler is that they don’t cost an arm and a leg. They are designed to be eco-friendly and don’t cost a lot to run. That’s why these handy machines are such a great alternative to a big central air conditioning unit!

Happy Birthday, Johnny Appleseed! {& recipe}

Today, September 26, is the birthday of the Johnny Appleseed, the legendary man who went across most of America planting apple seeds. You thought he was fake, right? Nope! Johnny Appleseed really did exist and lived from 1774 to 1844 {he was 70-years-old when he died}.

To help celebrate, I decided to round up all the apples in my house and make some delicious apple butter! I did it with the ingredients I had, with the number of apples I have, so many other apple butter recipes call for more spices {like all-spice and cloves} For that reason, I’m going to be pretty vague on the measurements in the recipe below:

Simple Apple Butter Recipe

apples {3-5 pounds}
water {about 1 cup per 2 pounds of apples}
apple cider vinegar {1/2 as much as the amount of water you use – so if you use 2 cups of water, only use 1 cup of apple cider vinegar}
cinnamon {I used quite a bit, but you can use less  or more per your preference – roughly about about 1/2 tsp per pound of apples}
a few splashes of lemon juice {I used about 1 tsp}
sugar {about 1/2 cup cup of puree – see below}

  1. The first step is to soften the apples. First, cut them into quarters and throw them into a steel pot with a heavy bottom. Leave on the skin! Now pour in the water and apple cider vinegar. The liquid won’t be above the apples, but it’s not supposed to. Cook the apples for about 20-minutes, until they’re soft and tender.
  2. Ladle the apples into a mesh sieve {there will be quite a bit of . Using a pestle {or anything else you’ve got lying around}, smash the apples through the sieve and into a large, heavy pot. Mix in the cinnamon and lemon juice. “Guestimate”, or properly measure, if you want, how much apple puree you have and add sugar accordingly – 1/2 cup per cup of puree – and stir it into the apple mixture.
  3. On low, heat the apple mixture for 1-2 hours, stirring frequently. Make sure you aren’t burning it :P   All the moisture will release from the mixture leaving you with some DELICIOUS apple butter!

Like I said, there are plenty of recipes out there that require more ingredients which add more flavor, but I just made it with what I had around the house. It came out amazing and I am very pleased with the outcome of my first ever batch of apple butter! LOL

Two New Veggie Tales: Larry Learns to Listen & Bob Lends a Helping Hand {Giveaway}

If your family is like mine, then you know exactly what it’s like to talk to tomatoes, smile with squash, and waltz with potatoes! For years, VeggieTales has been releasing some amazingly educational and fun movies that are perfect for any family wishing to instill some excellent values in their children. They have a definitely Christian undertone, as many of the stories come directly from the Bible, but I promise you – these movies are great for even families of a different denomination. They teach amazing lessons that I can tell my son is soaking in like a sponge!

Larry Learns to Listen

Goofy Larry the Cucumber is at it again in Larry Learns to Listen as he learns the lesson of listening to what others say. When his new game, Space Squadron, finally arrives, he goes straight into playing the game without reading the directions. As his friends warn him that he needs to read the directions to properly play the game, Larry ignores their warnings and his game eventually goes up in smoke! In this adorable tale, kids will learn why God gave us friends and how listening to them can prevent us from missing important things.

There are two classic VeggieTale stories included on this DVD – Pistachio {a VeggieTales version Pinocchoio to teach children the importance of listening to their parents} and Josh and the Big Wall {a Veggie version of the Bible story featuring Joshua and the Battle of Jericho}.

MY OPINION: Little Man and I really enjoyed this movie because this is something my toddler has been struggling with lately. Unfortunately, Little Man thinks he knows everything and doesn’t need to listen to simple instruction. With Veggie Tales: Larry Learns to Listen, I was able to express to Little Man how listening to Mommy and Daddy can help him learn to play and do things correctly. I was also able to encourage the reading we’ve been learning with the interactive book, “Larry Learns to Listen”, included in the Bonus Features!

Bob Lends a Helping Hand

The VeggieTales movie, Bob Lends a Helping Hand, Bob the Tomato comes to the rescue when Joe’s mom breaks her toe. While Bob helps with the housework and such, Larry and Joe come to the rescue in a more “superhero” style. This frustrations Bob, but Larry and Joe eventually learn that they can be superheros simply by sweeping the floors!

Like all VeggieTales DVDs, there are two shows included – Tomato Sawyer and Huckleberry Larry’s Big River Rescue {the lesson behind this tale is that while helping people isn’t always easy, it’s always the right thing to do} and Lyle the Kindly Viking {a Veggie tale of a courageous Viking who goes goes against what everyone else is doing and takes a stand against greedy people; a show about sharing and making friends}.

MY OPINION: Little Man is actually a very helpful kid. I’m not looking forward to the day, and I know it will come, that he decides that it is no longer fun to help me clean the house and pick-up his toys. Bob Lends a Helping Hand is definitely a DVD I will play for him when this time comes, though!  When Little Man acts up, I often refer to some of his favorite characters in similar situations to help him understand why what he is doing is wrong.

Both VeggieTales DVDs, Larry Learns to Listen and Bob Lends a Helping Hand, are available for $14.99 each, or as a set for only $20! With Christmas right around the corner, these are excellent gifts for the little ones in your life!

Now for the best part – a giveaway! One lucky reader will win a copy of each of the VeggieTales DVDs we reviewed: Larry Learns to Listen and Bob Lends a Helping Hand. Your kids will love them and learn valuable life lessons in the process!

This giveaway ends Sunday, October 9 @ 11:59pm (EST). Winners will be chosen at random shortly after and notified via email. Graphics and More With Funky Fresh Mama

As many of you know, I recently took part of a blog hop. During this hop, I went through and gathered quite a bit of inspiration from the other 119 blogs that were participating. I loved seeing all of the different themes and styles other bloggers were using to decorate their precious blogs with.

In true Gabrielle nature, I have, once again, updated my theme and pictures! I loved the “hippy” look my old style had, but it didn’t incorporate my love for monkeys {which is where the name CA Monkey Momma came from}. As I complained about this to a friend of mine, you know her as Funky Fresh Mama, she reminded me that she has done graphics for 10 years and had a few monkey themed graphics in her stockpile!  Before I could even ask, Nikki offered to design my header, my button {to the left}, as well as my About Me page and a few random pictures {like that Monkey Business one on the right sidebar}.

Since she did such an awesome job and really captured what I was looking for, I figured this something I should DEFINITELY share with you guys!  Nikki at Funky Fresh Mama is always available if you need her blogging help – whether it’s graphics, themes, or the actual writing!  She really is a renaissance  woman when it comes to blogging and is more than fair on her pricing. You’ll love her work!!

You can also follow Nikki’s blog, Funky Fresh Mama, on Facebook and Twitter! She shares everything from recipes and reviews to how to make the most money without ever leaving your home! Go check it out. You’ll be glad you did!

Bored? Connect 4 Launchers To The Rescue!

Hasbro has recently released a new version of the classic Connect 4 game, called Connect 4 Launchers. Like the original, Connect 4 Launchers has players take turns trying to line the little red and yellow checkers into a row of 4. This biggest difference, though, is that the new Connect 4 Launchers sends the checkers flying through the air where players try to line their pieces up, 4-in-a-row,  before the other player gets a chance. There are two levels – top and bottom – which allow plenty of room for players to line up their checkers.

My family really love playing Connect 4 Launchers. Little Man is only 4, so he only played the basic game and tried to line 4 checkers in a row, but Daddy and I had a LOT of fun with the other two games you can play:

  1. Championship Frantic Launch: This version is sort of like the original way, but you work on a points system. To keep track of points, there is a nifty little counter on the launchers. In this version, players take turns launching their checkers and receive one point if they get 4-in-a-row on the bottom tray and 2 if they get it on the top!
  2. Advanced Power Launch: This version is more fast-paced and definitely for the older kids and adults. It’s just like the Championship Frantic Launch version, but there are stripes on some of the checkers that make them worth more points!

Connect 4 Launchers is definitely a game that should be in every family’s collection. Hasbro is known for their fun and family-bonding games – Connect 4 Launchers is no different! You can have 2-4 players and ages 5+. It also only costs around $20 so it’s not an expensive investment. The boys and I get smiles plastered on our face every time we place Connect 4 Launchers because this game is so fun. Little Man has such an uncanny ability to tell you exactly which one of your checkers he’s going to cover. Because you can keep stacking your checker on the opponents, your adrenaline starts to flow and the excitement keeps building as you try to connect 4-in-a-row!

What the Heck is Spaghetti Popcorn??

One of my son’s favorite movies at the moment is Tangled. So when he asked to watch it tonight, I told him okay and asked if he would like some popcorn. As we waited for it to pop, Little Man looks up at me and goes, “Mom! Can we have spaghetti popcorn?”

Thinking I had misheard him, I gave him the “Whatchu talkin’ ’bout Willis?” look and said, “Spaghetti popcorn?”

“Yeah!” he replied.

“What is spaghetti popcorn?” I asked.

+     =

He got a big smile on his face and ran to the pantry; shouting “I’ll show you” while in route. Little Man returned with a can of Spaghetti-Os and said, “After the popcorn is done, you squeeze the can {indicating you open it with the can-opener}, open it up, and pour it on the popcorn!”

I got a disgusted look on my face and said, “That’s the grossest thing I’ve ever heard, dude. Where did you hear about popcorn spaghetti?” Of course, all he did was shrug and plaster a giant smile on his face.

What’s the weirdest thing you’re child has ever asked you to make?  I have no clue where Little Man got spaghetti popcorn from, but I can assure you we didn’t try it tonight! Was your little one’s dream snack/meal something you actually made? LOL

There’s No Better Orange Juice Than Fresh Squeezed!

One of my favorite things about living in Florida as a child was the fresh orchards that were next to our neighborhood. The smells of citrus could be picked up for miles. The taste of a fresh orange – right off the tree – is outstanding! They’re bursting with flavor and if they’re still warm from the hot summer day, then they really seem to just ooze orange juice!

Well, yesterday was the end of Grammy’s visit {she came for the weekend and ended up taking care of me while I was sick! LOL} so we decided to drive her home and go by a friend of her’s house who has a yard full of fruit trees and vegetable gardens! We were so amazed at how beautiful everything was and, of course, I didn’t have my camera, just my camera phone!

Little  Man and I had such a blast running around and grabbing oranges {and one pear}. Since Daddy didn’t come on the trip with us, we brought him a big bag of them and made fresh orange juice as soon as we got home!

Talk about DELICIOUS!!! Fresh squeezed orange juice just can’t be replicated in anything you buy in the stores. The juice that came from these California oranges was so sweet and yummy! I barely got the above picture taken before the boys snatched up the glass and downed the juice inside.

Summer is almost over and the prime time for fruit picking is almost over.  Did you and your family make sure to take advantage of the sweet goodness that grows right out of the ground? LOL
