It’s Time to Take a Stand

          I found this article on Facebook {my aunt posted it} and just HAD to share!
          Mike Wiley, of Mike Wiley Productions, is a theatrical playwright dedicated to teaching our youth about AMERICAN history {after you read the article, you’ll understand what I mean by that}.  He goes to schools around the country teaching children, through humor and drama, about where America came from.  During one of his recent performances {Thursday to be exact}, Mr. Wiley was confronted with something many African-Americans are: racism.  No, it wasn’t anything violent, but it was a definite case of IGNORANCE on the part of these young white boys.  During his performance, a group of white young men began yelling out various remarks that obviously offended many of the fellow students.  Only one, though, was courageous enough to take a stand.  He marched right to the front of the stage to avoid confrontation and inform the actor that he was getting pretty heated.  The principal began to stop the boy, but the Wiley waved her off and let the boy speak.  He took the opportunity presented to re-iterate the message he’d been trying to convey – “It only takes one person to stand up and say enough is enough. It only takes one person to start a movement.”
          After the play, Mike Wiley headed off stage and the principal of the school took the microphone.  Get this – she completely ignored everything that had just happened!!  LUCKILY, an elderly teacher took the microphone right after and took advantage of the situation – “I am extremely ashamed of you all. Ya’ll know me, I’m a history teacher and I know every bit of what that man just said. We are all children, every last one of us- black, brown, yellow, and white UNDER GOD. And if you don’t take heed of that, your future is hopeless. If any of you or your parents have a problem with what I just said…..I’m in room 104.”
          Way to go, teach!  That’s all I have to say to that one. LOL That’s what a auditorium of racially unsure children need.  They need an authoritative figure to stand up and tell them that if they don’t get their $H*+ together, they’re doomed!  I, for one, am very glad that Mike Wiley took the time to share this story.  Like he said, it only takes one!  Please take his lead and teach your children about acceptance.  Ignoring it isn’t going to make our youth more tolerant.  It’s going to keep them in the dark where they’ve been for centuries!

          To learn more about Mike Wiley, please check out his web site HERE. Be sure to check out his tour schedule to see if he’s coming to a city near you! :D   I really wish I would have had a speaker like this come to my school when I was young!  I grew up in “Redneck Central” and a lot of them could have used a little slap of tolerance. LMAO

Home-made, All-Natural, All-PURPOSE Cleaner

     Today I mixed my own home-made all-purpose cleaner for the first time. :D   I was buying something from Amazon and needed to spend $3 to get the free shipping, so I decided to get the Castile soap I had been wanting to try.  I read about it a while ago and somehow it just popped into my head as being the perfect item {And it was – I only needed ½ tsp per bottle and it came in a bottle 3 ounces big!}.  Here’s what I did:
Get a water bottle {you can get them at the Dollar Store or Walmart for $1} and pour in 1/2tsp each of Castile soap, Borax, and lemon juice.  Fill the bottle to the fill line with WARM water, tilt the bottle back and forth {you can shake it if you want, but it causes a bunch of bubbles lol}, and VOILA!  Yeah, it’s that easy!!
     Honestly, I can’t say I notice a different between it and the Lysol I use {except that powerful smell Lysol has}.  It was also MUCH cheaper & safer than Lysol.  It’s Borax, organic soap, lemon juice, and water… how can you get better than that?  It cleans just as well!

Meet The Flock

     That’s right! They’re finally here!  We ended up getting 4 all-together.  They’re about a week old and ADORABLE!  I’ll do this by breed:

Lucy {Black Plymouth Rock} – She’ll lay large brown eggs.
Shirley {White Leghorn} – She’ll lay white eggs.
Laverne & Ethel {Easter Egg Layers} – They’ll lay blue, green, pink, white or brown egg!! :D HOW NUTSO IS THAT?! lol

     Needless to say, my whole family is giddy about our new addition.  Because they’re babies, we still have them in the house in a box with a heat lamp.  {We decided we wanted to get chickens as chicks so we could raise them ourselves.}  Little  Man is completely infatuated with them and checks on them often.  I’ve got the baby monitor hooked up so I can watch them from my room LOL.  They seem pretty content in their new homes.  I’m very happy with the choices we made and, as I knew it would be from reading up on chickens, they each have their own personality.  That’s how I was able to name each of them – they each act differently and after a little time, I knew exactly which chicken was getting what name.

     I’ll be sure to keep everyone updated on our new flock and how they are progressing.  I’m very anxious to see how they grow and am glad that I get to show this to Little Man at such a young age :D   Yes, we still have 4-6 months before we’re getting eggs, but in my mind, the ease of knowing exactly how my chickens were raised from day one {We actually went and looked at them when they were about 2 days old and again yesterday, but we weren’t ready for them so didn’t get them.} is worth the wait! :D

Wish me luck!

     Today’s the day… the day I’ve been waiting for… we’re getting our chickens!!  :D   I’m so excited!  I’ve got their area ready, just need to bring them home.  Little Man is ecstatic too!  He knew we weren’t going to go until after his nap so he woke from his nap, ran into the living room, and yells “I’m up from my nap!  Let’s go get my Spider-man chicken!!  I’m ready to see the baby chickens!!”
     After much consideration and research, we’ve decided to get FOUR chickens. LOL  Not only would they have more companions, but we’d get a good amount of eggs.  We’re not looking to get a lot, just enough for us and possibly some family members :)   I’m getting two different types of chickens – Araucanas {They lay green and blue eggs!} and some breed of brown egg layer.  I’m actually still battling with the idea of getting all 4 Araucanas.  Guess we’ll see what my final decision is when I get back.

AND JAMMIE – STOP LAUGHING AT MY CHICKEN NAMES! LOL  {the rest of you can let me know what you think when I get home later and post pictures lol}

Summer Is Rapidly Approaching… Are You Ready? {Giveaway}

     Yes, this may sound like a weird concept for those of you on the East Coast currently getting bombarded with snow, but summer IS on it’s way.  With it comes the application of sunscreen before leaving the house, vacuuming sand out of the car after a beach trip, and crafting swing sets to entertain the kids when they’re energy levels are through the roof!  LOL
     One thing Daddy and I are currently researching is a new grill.  There’s nothing better than char-grilled chicken and burgers!  Throw in some good friends and you’ve got yourself a party! :D   We’re not looking for anything fancy, just something that’s simple to use and is going to last us a couple summers.   It’s gotta be big enough to spread out the carne asada meat, while not being obnoxiously big.  Luckily, we’ve still got another month or so until we’d be able to start grillin’ so we’ve got a little time to continue our search.  I’m one of those people who thoroughly researches any big purchase {and a lot of small ones LOL}… I want to know what I’m buying is the best I can get for the money I’m spending {really, who doesn’t?}

     Well, to kick off the summer of 2011 right, CSN Stores has offered one of my lucky readers a $30 Gift Card Code to use on any of their sites!!  Please read below to enter:
